The Hope Van has been a good neighbor in every place it has served. This ordinance is a way to stop it from providing services where the homeless are.
Shastaminded:
It adds an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy and creates a barrier. Besides, it was only parked by Empire two days a week.
Angel:
Does the Hope van track who gets it's services?
Shastaminded:
Now the patients it would have seen will have to go to the Emergency Room instead.
Angel:
They still go to emergency
Angel:
A traffic stop was made on a car load of out of town folks, all headed to the Hope van.
Angel:
Don't worry officer as soon as we are done we will be gone
SYSTEM:
Please welcome Shastaminded who just joined the chat.
Angel:
How is it, the Hope van can preform services without a permit?
Angel:
You can't sneeze in this town without a permit
Jarhead:
understand both sides of the discussion.... but there are two sides to this one...and just parking in front or near a business is going to have an impact on that business
Shastaminded:
Wow. Haters gonna hate I guess. All those doctors and nurses taking care of patients where they are must be evil.
Jarhead:
hospitals are obviously heavily regulated but the van doesn't have as much oversight
Jarhead:
what business are you in Shastaminded ?
Shastaminded:
The Hope van is licensed as a Mobil medical clinic by the State of Caliifornia.
Angel:
What does it do? is it tracking the syphilis outbreak? are they delivering morphine to the recovering ?
Shastaminded:
I have an office near downtown.
Jarhead:
near ?
Shastaminded:
West street.
Angel:
They are mobile so how is it they take away from the numbers in emergency, who know where they are
Jarhead:
so you would be fine with the van parking in front of your business ? would your neighbors or partners ?
Angel:
I have never seen anything published showing the tax payers what they do and what is the benefit of having this van?
Shastaminded:
I don't have a problem with what they are doing. By definition, the patient visit on the van does not occur in the ER.
Jarhead:
Angel, before participating in leadership Redding, I didn't either
Angel:
What is the County health services for?
Angel:
Is it too far out of town?
Jarhead:
Shastaminded, so you and your neighbor businesses would be fine with them parking in front of your business ?
Angel:
I just would like to know, if the county is paying for it there should be accountablility to the public
Jarhead:
when I was running union bank, they called and we were able to have them park in our lot...very popular, many people gave blood during those times...
Angel:
Just curious what services they provide, methadone? more Dental than medical?

I would not have a problem with the Hope van being parked by my business. I know they are trying to help these people stay healthy and hopefully get into housing. And support to become self sufficient.
Shastaminded:
They provide primary medical services and dental care.
Angel:
I read about their services but what I am interested is that they actually do, what are the statistics? what is the benefit of having the service? who is getting the service, women, children, vets? who?
Angel:
I know who they say it's offered to, but the information on who gets the service and what they are providing would be valuable in my mind.

Wow. So the Hope Van should stop taking care of its patients downtown. If a business is located in a pocket of homeless, how do you figure the Van being there or not will reduce the number of homeless walking the streets by the business?
Jarhead:
Carl, guest Shastaminded is on West street and feels comfortable with them parking in front of his business, we should have volunteers step up to give them a place to park
Shastaminded:
By that reckoning, the Empire Recovery Center should be shut down too because their drug addict clients are unsightly and might cause customers to buy less coffe, tacos or car washes?
Shastaminded:
Or Paint or bicycles? And don't forget People of Progress has unsightly customers too.
Shastaminded:
As long as the Hope Van is being a good neighbor, making sure the trash is picked up I still don't see why their minor impact should now be subject to an unnecessary ordinance/permit process?
Jarhead:
if I wanted to open a bar or a gun business in a neighborhood my future neighbors would have a say...why is this any different ?
Shastaminded:
This isn't a new operation. It has been operating for more than a decade.
Shastaminded:
The hatefulness is new though.

Jarhead:
I haven't heard anyone say that they hate anything...just have concerns and want it discussed and possibly addressed
Shastaminded:
The intention of this new permit process is clear - to reduce and or eliminate the Hope van's ability to serve its patients.
Jarhead:
Shasta, why is it that anytime someone disagrees with something these days...they are a hater ?
Shastaminded:
It will foster Nimbyism
Jarhead:
if the city requires me to get a permit to open my business ....are they really secretly trying to get rid of my type of business ? really ?
Shastaminded:
The Van is either doing good work where it is or it isn't. The doctors and nurses know full well what works best with their patients. If it wasn't necessary it wouldn't exist.

Well, we will see what happens. If the Hope van must go away because the businesses in the downtown despise it's presence, then I guess that is what will happen. I just don't think this is necessary and I don't believe the impact to the businesses is that severe. I agree that the large homeless po
Shastaminded:
*homeless population is a serious issue. But the Hope Van did not create it.
Shastaminded:
If anything, the Hope Van is trying to help reduce the problem.
Jarhead:
you may be over-reacting as the "Hope van going away" is not likely...only changing locations or finding ways to work with those that they serve
RallySally:
Time for the State of Jefferson yet?
Shastaminded:
Time will tell. The Hope Van has been asked to change locations before without a newly invented permit process. Being pushed out of serving where the patients are will be unfortunate.
Jarhead:
Sally, yep...this should get some extra supporters
Jarhead:
Shasta, we have all been asked over the years to adjust...nothing different here..
RallySally:
We need 1,000's more people to rise up and make it happen.
Jarhead:
the only thing for sure...is change...
Shastaminded:
This was intentional. Of that I have no doubt. Something will change. I will be disappointed if the doctors and nurses can no longer serve their patients know it works best.
Jarhead:
Sally, each of these type of occurrences must be considered a gift as it moves a larger portion of the northern state towards breaking away
