Siskiyousam: AR is now a general term, like Kleenex. AR , was the original designation for the military rifle manufactured by Armalite, designed by John Stoner.

RTE: I had one day of training with an M16 when I was in the USAF

Siskiyousam: Most people just say AR but Colt, Remington, and many others make both semi auto and military full auto versions.

RTE: I knew you can convert an AR15 to be automatic. So I thought the 16 was really a different rifle from the 15.

Siskiyousam: No you can't convert without machining a new lower receiver. There is a block of metal inside a semiautomatic receiver which precludes the installation of a sear selector.

RTE: We now have a UN Police force in our country.

Siskiyousam: Get a good quality long gun, a decent quality semiauto hand gun, a good quality shot gun, and the training to be effective with all the above. Preparation is just cheap insurance.
